Sea Water Desalination is a process in which salty sea water is converted into drinkable clean water. Such clean water has reasonably lower dissolved salt content so that it can be used for various industrial, agricultural or domestic use.

Sea water has around 3.5% of salt content (35000 ppm or 35 g/L TDS) having high levels of hardness and suspended solids. To make sea water fit for drinking purpose, it is necessary to have array of processes that include pretreatment to remove coarse and fine fraction (coagulation, flocculation or UF), pH adjustment, chemical dosing to reduce scaling and fouling, removal of TDS using Reverse Osmosis (SWRO), degasification, chlorine dosing etc.

As high levels of salt in feed sea water results in high osmotic pressure, it is necessary to apply high feed pressure (48-52 barg) to RO membrane modules to produce permeate water. SWRO membranes have high salt rejection typically of 99.98% and 8-10% of water recover. By smartly combining arrays of SWRO membrane in multiple stages, overall system water recovery can be adjusted up to 60-70%.
