Innovative and Sustainable Separation with Forward Osmosis Membranes
What is Forward Osmosis (FO)?
Forward Osmosis (FO) is an advanced and energy-efficient membrane separation process that utilizes a semi-permeable membrane to achieve water flow across the membrane using a concentration gradient, rather than applying hydraulic pressure. This process enables the recovery, concentration, separation, or purification of valuable feed sources while generating fresh water with minimal energy and pressure requirements.
In the FO process, water recovery is driven by a concentrated draw solution that creates a concentration gradient across the membrane. The recovered water is mixed with the draw solution, necessitating a subsequent draw solution regeneration step to separate the product water and the draw solution. This regeneration is a critical component to ensure the continuity and efficiency of the FO operation.
Advantages of Forward Osmosis (FO) Technology
FO offers significant advantages over conventional pressure-driven membrane processes, making it a highly promising and sustainable technology:
- High Water Recovery: Achieves superior recovery rates for a variety of feed sources.
- Low Operational Pressure: Relies on osmotic pressure, eliminating the need for high hydraulic pressure.
- Energy Efficiency: Low energy consumption per unit of recovered water.
- Simple and Modular Design: Integrated and adaptable for various applications.
- Reduced Waste Generation: Minimizes brine and other by-products.
- Low Capital and Maintenance Costs: Economical operation with reduced operational expenses.
- Longer Membrane Life: Low fouling and scaling increase membrane durability.
- Complex Wastewater Treatment: Handles challenging wastewater compositions effectively.
- Flexible Configurations: Scalable and modular design tailored to specific needs.
Applications of Forward Osmosis (FO) Technology
FO’s versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial and specialized applications, including:
- Brine Minimization for RO Concentrate
- Lithium Extraction and Refining
- Effluent Treatment Plants
- Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)
- Water and Wastewater Treatment, Recycling, and Reuse
- Dewatering and Concentration of High-Value Product Streams

GreenPebble Technologies' SEPION Forward Osmosis (FO) Membrane
GreenPebble Technologies designs manufactures, and supplies proprietary SEPION hollow fiber Forward Osmosis membrane, module, and plant systems - for applications such as ZLD, wastewater treatment, and recycling, seawater desalination, industrial effluent treatment plants, etc.
GPT uses a proprietary arrangement of membrane system along with FO to recover product water and reconcentrate the draw solution. Depending on the feed source, inlet quality parameters, and overall treatment goals, GPT customizes the plant configuration to regenerate draw solution including RO, NF or membrane distillation (MD).
Our commercial plant installations showed successful outcomes for our clients in achieving around 70-80% of wastewater recovery and a 50% reduction in energy consumption.
