Membrane Distillation

Resource Recovery and Brine Minimization using Sustainable and Advanced Membrane Distillation (MD)

Membrane Distillation (MD) is a thermal separation process that uses vapor transport across a hydrophobic porous membrane. The process relies on the difference in vapor pressure created by a temperature gradient between the hot feed side and the cold permeate side.

Core Element: The hydrophobic membrane selectively allows only water vapor to pass through its pores, while blocking the liquid phase.
Operating Principle: The water evaporates from the hot feed side due to the temperature difference, passes through the membrane, and condenses on the cold permeate side, resulting in purified water.

Advantages of the Membrane Distillation (MD) Process
The MD process offers several significant advantages:
  • Mild Operating Conditions: Operates at relatively low temperatures and pressures.
  • 100% Rejection of Dissolved Ions: Ensures complete removal of salts, heavy metals, and other dissolved ions.
  • Stable Performance at High Concentrations: Maintains consistent performance even with high solute concentrations.
  • High Solute Concentration Treatment: Capable of treating feed water with high solute content.
  • Modular Setup: Easy to install and expand, offering flexible configurations.
  • Long Membrane Life: Durable membranes with extended operational lifespans.
  • Low Cost of Ownership: Reduces operational and maintenance costs due to its efficient design.
  • Compatibility with Waste Heat Recovery Systems: Can integrate with waste heat systems, further reducing energy consumption and operating costs.

Applications of Membrane Distillation (MD)
The MD process is widely used in various liquid-liquid separation applications, including:

Seawater Desalination
Industrial Wastewater Treatment and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)
Waste Resource Recovery
Separation of Volatile Compounds
Low-Temperature Dewatering in food, beverages, and dairy processing

Alcohol Dehydration
Purification of Biotech Binary or Multicomponent Mixtures
